CHAPTER 4

Lindy

I didn’t want to go to his hotel. Maybe I should have, but I thought about the lobby, the elevators, both going in and coming out. If I bring him to my house, I’m in control. Don’t ask why I need to be—it’s not a sexual thing. It’s a, well, a control thing.

I haven’t driven with a man in the car in a long time. I’m amused when he fiddles with my radio, which I never use.

“Listening for your own music?” I ask as he scans the stations.

“Yep. You don’t have any presets?”

“I use my phone.”

He picks it up from the console, and I swerve a bit as I reach for it.

“What are you doing?” I demand.

“Wanted to see what music you listen to.”

I’m grateful for the lock, because my taste in music is all over the place. I’m not embarrassed exactly. But he will judge me.

And then I start to think about what he’s going to think about my house. How…normal it is, how normal and square it might seem to a rock star.

“What’s your house like?” I ask.

He makes a sound that might be a laugh as he puts my locked phone back on the console. “It’s nice.”

“I mean, I’m sure. How nice?”

“Um. It’s in the Hollywood Hills, kind of a lot of squares all stacked together, and it’s supposed to be earthquake proof.”

My heart gives a kick. “Have you been there for one? Like, felt one?”

“A couple of small ones, nothing major, just some window rattling. I’ve had damage from them, but I haven’t had anything happen while I was home.”

“But you’re not home that much, are you?”

“About half the year, but not all at once. Like, two months here, six weeks there, like that.”

Right. Still no stability in his life, nine years down the road. The price of success, and the band was becoming only more popular. I can’t imagine them slowing down any time soon.

So why am I bringing him home? Because I can? Because I’m lonely?

Because I miss how he loved me, how I felt in his arms?

Best not to think too much about it, right? Just go with it? Still, I’m nervous because while part of this feels familiar, so much more doesn’t.

But it’s too late now. I’m pulling onto my street, pulling up to the two-story house that is probably too much like my parents’ house. My heart is thundering as I slide out of the car and walk toward the house, not even looking over to see if he is following me. What am I scared of? That he’ll see how vulnerable I am? How long it’s been for me? How far apart I feel like we are?

I hate feeling this way with him. I want everything to be like it was, but we’ve both lived a lot in the past nine years, and our experiences couldn’t be more different.

I’m shaking as I unlock the door, step inside, turn on the light. When I hear him close the door behind me, I finally turn to face him, and hope he doesn’t see the fear etched on my face.
